Some founders pick a business. Antoine Wilson was picked by a moment — and he's been answering it ever since.
The story begins far from the savanna, in an air traffic control tower in South Florida, where a young man from North Carolina worked the radar scopes, guiding hundreds of strangers safely through the sky each shift. Antoine had always been the steady-handed type. A proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., he was the friend everyone trusted — the one who planned the trips, knew the airports, remembered everyone's seat preferences.

Then, in 2011, he took his first trip abroad, and something loosened. Over the next decade he crossed 47 countries and six continents, and every stamp in his passport kept pointing toward one question he couldn't shake: where are the people who look like me?
From A.D. Elite Travels to a Question That Changed Everything
By 2018, Antoine had turned his gift for travel into a business. His mother, watching him pour hours into planning other people's dream trips, offered the nudge every mother-of-a-founder eventually gives: "Turn your passion into a business." That November, he founded A.D. Elite Travels and became the travel expert his whole community relied on.
But the moment that changed his life happened in November 2019, in Johannesburg, South Africa, in a conversation with a local. The woman looked at Antoine and asked a question so simple it stunned him:
"Why don't Black Americans travel to Africa?"

Antoine didn't have an answer. He flew home carrying the question instead of a souvenir. He thought about the skewed narratives most Americans grow up hearing about Africa — poverty, danger, distance — and how none of them matched the Africa he had just stood inside: vibrant, luxurious, breathtaking, welcoming. He made a vow that day. He would help change how Black America sees the continent — not by arguing with old narratives, but by replacing them with the real thing.
Building a Black-Owned Safari Company in Tanzania
A vow is one thing. A visa, a team, and vehicles are another. In 2022, Antoine partnered with Okello Jao — a Tanzanian safari expert whose own story runs from the streets of Arusha's Tabata neighborhood to the top of safari operations — and together they founded Melanated Safaris LTD. in Arusha, Tanzania.

This is what makes the company different: it isn't a U.S. agency reselling someone else's safari. It's a Black-owned safari company registered in Tanzania, staffed by Tanzanians, with an office you can visit in Arusha. Antoine splits his life between New York City and East Africa, translating between two worlds — understanding exactly what his travelers need to feel safe and celebrated, and holding a local team to the highest standard of luxury East Africa offers.
The mission reaches beyond luxury. Antoine is passionate about equipping underserved communities with passports, because he believes a passport is one of the most powerful tools for changing how a person sees the world — and themselves. And by building a company that hires locally at every level, he's making sure the money this industry generates stays in the hands of the communities that make it magical.
What He Tells Every Traveler
Ask Antoine what he hopes people take home, and he won't say "photos." He'll talk about the moment the plane door opens and the warm African air hits you. The Chagga farmer who teaches you to roast coffee with the same hands that raised his children. The feeling of standing where your story began.

"When we travel with open hearts, we learn from our differences, connect through our cultures, and create moments where both the traveler and the local walk away richer in spirit," he says.
The question he was asked in Johannesburg now has its answer. It's a company in Arusha with his name on the founding documents — and a growing family of travelers discovering that Africa was never far away. It was just waiting to be seen.
If Antoine's story speaks to something in you, come see Tanzania through his eyes. Start the conversation and let our team prepare you for a homecoming you'll never forget.
Asante sana — we look forward to welcoming you home.
